Communist wins rigged election in Venezuela

It is easy for us to get so caught up in our own national election that we do not see what is going on immediately around us. The ugly shame of former President Jimmy Carter volunteering to observe and then declaring the Venezuelan elections valid, when there is significant and eye-opening evidence to the contrary, ought to be front page news.

US Democrats have a long history of trying to fix our own elections: from Tammany Hall, to the Daley machine in Chicago; from delivering Texas for LBJ with dead people voting in alphabetical order, to the Mob delivering West Virginia for JFK in 1960; from breaking election law in replacing Toricelli in NJ two years ago, to trying to deny our military a voice in Florida in 2000.

And so for a former President to preside over the corrupt coronation of a Castro-supported communist leader who has been busy denying the US access to previously available Venezuelan oil reserves and increasing our dependence on Arab oil--even as Venezuelans in reality probably have overwhelmingly voted Chavez out--is an utter disgrace. It would be simple to write this off as "accident" rather than to see conspiracy at work and to blame the tentacles of "world socialism"...but do not be so sure.

Still, even if Carter's blessing was more out of his own incompetence and gullibility, instead of something more sinister, this latest shameful chapter adds to Carter's legacy of appeasement, bankrupt economic policy, and overall incompetence. His Presidency still represents one of the lowest points of American influence in our history. The only good thing you can say about Carter is that he paved the way for the Reagan Revolution.

One hopes this disgusting electoral travesty in Venezuela is not a portent of things to come from the Democrats in our own elections, but the smart money says that the left will once again employ teams of lawyers to litigate in any state where the vote is even close this year. As history has proven, the power-hungry American left will go to any lengths, including illegalities, to rig an American Presidential election, particularly if their defeat looks inevitable. In Florida, Republicans were taken unawares by the blatant Gore attempt to invalidate the election results and disenfranchise military voters, despite 2 separate recounts. This time around, Republicans would be wise to adopt the adage "fool me once, shame on you...", and to have their own legal SWAT teams ready to deploy. Too much is at stake in this one to leave anything to chance.
