The Discerning Texan

All that is necessary for evil to triumph, is for good men to do nothing.

That delightful jewel, Savannah

Gourmet Southern Cooking. The whole of the historic downtown area shady with open air cafes and galleries, breezy, azalea's everywhere--huge oaks covered with Spanish moss. The only city in the country with 24 planned park/squares at alternating intersections. Forrest Gump sat at one of them. A house on one of shaded squares was where the murder depicted in "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" occurred; we toured the house, including the study where Kevin Spacey's character pulled the trigger. A house with some of the finest antique furnishings and 16th-century paintings in the world. An unbelievable combination of Architectural achievement, stunning decor, and historic art treasures. Savannah is a highly cultured place, epitomizing that of the Old South. The Savannah School of Art and Design, the largest arts university in the country, keeps the place young, vibrant, and most importantly, spends millions to preserve the city's centuries-old residential districts in a pristine condition that even Georgetown residents would envy. And you can live there! Not hard to imagine for me: Savannah is truly a national treasure. And my being a big Civil War buff didn't hurt either.

Definitely one of the best vacations I've taken in a long time. And to those who laugh abouthe the notion that it has some of the finest gourmet food in the United States, I can only say :)

But it is nevertheless great to be back in the Republic of Texas, my birthplace and home. You can take the Texan out of Texas, but you can't take Texas out of a Texan. So even the vacation has a happy ending.

And when it comes to the upcoming judicial showdown (to plagarize Bobby Kennedy): now it's on to the Senate, and let's win there...
