The Discerning Texan
All that is necessary for evil to triumph, is for good men to do nothing.

I was out of pocket yesterday and so did not hear Newt Gingrich's announcement that he was not going to run for President. This comes as quite a surprise--and I wonder if there is more to it than the explanation in the linked news story; surely it comes as no surprise to the former Speaker that he would have to divest of his foundations, such as his new American Solutions--divestiture is par for the course for any President. And only one week ago Gingrich was almost guaranteeing his entry into the race by saying if his exploratory committee could raise $30 million dollars in a month, he was in. Still it appears he is out, as evidenced by this audio on his website.
In any case, this can only be good news for Fred Thompson, who appears to be the most promising Reagan conservative that is still viable on the Republican side of the ledger, and for whom Gingrich has spoken very highly in recent months. Could Gingrich have cut a deal with Fred? (e.g. Gingrich gets VP, Fred serves only one term, Newt is then the frontrunner....)
