Tancredo "Out" for Drug Legalization
I will admit it: I have always been staunchly conservative, but have never agreed with this whole "war on drugs" thing. I would rather have people smoking weed on the streets while murderers and child molesters spend more time in overcrowded jails instead of being set free to make room for the thousands of drug offenders. It takes the profit motive out of the Mexican Black Market, and thereby deprives the Drug Lords from funds to promote their increasing violence (just like ending prohibition did for stopping all the violence surrounding the Liquor smuggling trade in the 1930's...does the name Capone come to mind? And do you see people killing each other over alcohol sales today?).
Today Tom Tancredo came out for common sense (watch the videos!); the very same common sense that the great William F. Buckley, Jr. spent years arguing for: one of the best examples can be found here. Every single essay is worth your time. It made such an impact that I still have the magazine.
This is not a Left/Right issue. It is a Liberty issue, and also a free markets issue. Count me in for Liberty.
Our law enforcement and military dollars could go to much better use. There would be lots more prison space for the really bad guys, and it also frees up the courts. You tax the drugs just like you tax alcohol sales--shoot, you could use the proceeds for addiction rehab.
It just makes too much sense. If people want drugs they are going to find a way; so why bankroll the thugs in the black market to boot?
