Mike Huckabee's recent polling gains seem to have generated significant alarm among Republican movers and shakers. As well they should. Normally I would not expect a publication with the stature of National Review to come out for a primary candidate, but these are not ordinary times.
I had a brief passing thought today that perhaps Gingrich could step in and save the day, but it is probably far too late for that option. I am holding out hope that Fred can gain some last minute momentum (maybe at Huckabee's expense...) and surprise the nation with a strong finish. But in the absence of something miraculous from the Thompson camp, it is hard not to agree with the Editors of NR that Mitt is the cream of the remaining crop.
Note to Iowans: Please don't tell me you really think Huckabee can beat Obama or Clinton--he can't. If the Republicans were to nominate Huckabee it would be a mistake of epic proportions. We simply cannot afford 8 years of a Democrat Presidency.
There is a big weight on the shoulders of Iowans next month: for the sake of us all, let's hope they do the right thing.
