The REAL Cost of 'Live Earth'

Kim Priestap finds a piece in the Daily Mail which quantifies the carbon footprint of this weekend's Gore-gasm:
The Live Earth event is, in the words of one commentator: "a massive, hypocritical fraud".

For while the organisers' commitment to save the planet is genuine, the very process of putting on such a vast event, with more than 150 performers jetting around the world to appear in concerts from Tokyo to Hamburg, is surely an exercise in hypocrisy on a grand scale.

Matt Bellamy, front man of the rock band Muse, has dubbed it 'private jets for climate change'.

A Daily Mail investigation has revealed that far from saving the planet, the extravaganza will generate a huge fuel bill, acres of garbage, thousands of tonnes of carbon emissions, and a mileage total equal to the movement of an army.

The most conservative assessment of the flights being taken by its superstars is that they are flying an extraordinary 222,623.63 miles between them to get to the various concerts - nearly nine times the circumference of the world. The true environmental cost, as they transport their technicians, dancers and support staff, is likely to be far higher.

The total carbon footprint of the event, taking into account the artists' and spectators' travel to the concert, and the energy consumption on the day, is likely to be at least 31,500 tonnes of carbon emissions, according to John Buckley of Carbonfootprint.com, who specialises in such calculations.

Throw in the television audience and it comes to a staggering 74,500 tonnes. In comparison, the average Briton produces ten tonnes in a year.

The concert will also generate some 1,025 tonnes of waste at the concert stadiums - much of which will go directly into landfill sites.

Moreover, the pop stars headlining the concerts are the absolute antithesis of the message they promote - with Madonna leading the pack of the worst individual rock star polluters in the world.

Sepermodel Kate Moss, another profligate polluter through her use of private jets, is producing a T-shirt for the event. Yet, Gore is touting the concerts as 'carbon neutral'. So how can that be?

A: It can't. As Glenn Reynolds put it, in his own succinct way:

MORE GREENHOUSE HYPOCRISY:

51 plane flights in six months for an environmental author and lecturer--embarrassing? Yeah, that's one way of putting it. Another would be "I guess my entire career has really just been one long act of satire." It is possible that none of these flights were even slightly superfluous?

I'll start acting as if it's a crisis when the people who are telling me it's a crisis start acting as if it's a crisis.

Don't hold your breath on that one.

A Reality Check for "Live Earth" Acolytes

Nice concert; nothing like a bunch of aging rockers providing Al Gore a global stage for his upcoming Presidential campaign. Complete with audience members sporting "Run Al, Run" T-Shirts. Pardon me while I hurl.

In the meantime, as Scientists continue to make more and more discoveries--this one in Greenland for example--the sheer gall of Mr. Gore and the utterly fictional nature of An Inconvenient Truth becomes more and more obvious:

Ice-covered Greenland really was green a half-million or so years ago, covered with forests in a climate much like that of Sweden and eastern Canada today.

An international team of researchers recovered ancient DNA from the bottom of an ice core that indicates the presence of pine, yew and alder trees as well as insects.

The researchers, led by Eske Willerslev of the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, say this is the first proof that there was forest in southern Greenland.

Included were genetic traces of butterflies, moths, flies and beetles, they report in Friday's edition of the journal Science.

Historians have long known that Vikings established colonies on coastal Greenland over a thousand years ago, but that it disappeared as the Little Ice Age waxed. The creep of the glaciers killed the agricultural efforts of the colonists, and they eventually abandoned Greenland. Researchers had assumed that the colony took advantage of an exceptionally warm temporary weather pattern that freed the land from its normal icy status, but this discovery could show that the glacial period of Greenland is the exception rather than the norm.

That has some implications for the climate-change debate. Advocates of anthropogenic climate change use Greenland as key evidence in their argument. They claim that the loss of Greenland's glacial mass -- which is still in dispute -- shows the effect that mankind has had on the Earth's climate. If Greenland's glaciers have only recently formed, then that argument makes little sense. Some estimates of the age of the DNA from the central portion of southern Greenland have them as recent as 116,000 years ago.

If you have the courage to learn the truth, it is out there. If you choose instead to go along just to get along--and you refuse to see any facts that would refute your world view--then your ignorance is your business; but then please stop pretending to be knowledgeable about this subject, and stop your ridiculous whining to "save the earth." If you want to be taken seriously, learn all the facts. Fortunately I am here to show you the way: Here is a site where you can watch this 10-minute clip of pertinent facts from Channel 4's (UK) "The Great Global Warming Swindle". (Once you have watched that, you can watch the entire documentary here). Joe Bob says: "check it out."

Dennis Miller has a nice rant about Global Warming on Fox's 1/2 Hour News Hour. And of course there is always this classic evisceration of "Consensus Science."

We should save the Earth all right: from these alarmists and from all the marxists and socialists and grant-hungry climatologists in the background egging them on.

Some Inconvenient Truths for Al Gore

Big Al has been getting away with some whoppers, but fortunately we have James M. Taylor to set us straight:

Many of the assertions Gore makes in his movie, ''An Inconvenient Truth,'' have been refuted by science, both before and after he made them. Gore can show sincerity in his plea for scientific honesty by publicly acknowledging where science has rebutted his claims.

For example, Gore claims that Himalayan glaciers are shrinking and global warming is to blame. Yet the September 2006 issue of the American Meteorological Society's Journal of Climate reported, "Glaciers are growing in the Himalayan Mountains, confounding global warming alarmists who recently claimed the glaciers were shrinking and that global warming was to blame."

Gore claims the snowcap atop Africa's Mt. Kilimanjaro is shrinking and that global warming is to blame. Yet according to the November 23, 2003, issue of Nature magazine, "Although it's tempting to blame the ice loss on global warming, researchers think that deforestation of the mountain's foothills is the more likely culprit. Without the forests' humidity, previously moisture-laden winds blew dry. No longer replenished with water, the ice is evaporating in the strong equatorial sunshine."

Gore claims global warming is causing more tornadoes. Yet the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change stated in February that there has been no scientific link established between global warming and tornadoes.

Gore claims global warming is causing more frequent and severe hurricanes. However, hurricane expert Chris Landsea published a study on May 1 documenting that hurricane activity is no higher now than in decades past. Hurricane expert William Gray reported just a few days earlier, on April 27, that the number of major hurricanes making landfall on the U.S. Atlantic coast has declined in the past 40 years. Hurricane scientists reported in the April 18 Geophysical Research Letters that global warming enhances wind shear, which will prevent a significant increase in future hurricane activity.

Gore claims global warming is causing an expansion of African deserts. However, the Sept. 16, 2002, issue of New Scientist reports, "Africa's deserts are in 'spectacular' retreat . . . making farming viable again in what were some of the most arid parts of Africa."

Gore argues Greenland is in rapid meltdown, and that this threatens to raise sea levels by 20 feet. But according to a 2005 study in the Journal of Glaciology, "the Greenland ice sheet is thinning at the margins and growing inland, with a small overall mass gain." In late 2006, researchers at the Danish Meteorological Institute reported that the past two decades were the coldest for Greenland since the 1910s.

Gore claims the Antarctic ice sheet is melting because of global warming. Yet the Jan. 14, 2002, issue of Nature magazine reported Antarctica as a whole has been dramatically cooling for decades. More recently, scientists reported in the September 2006 issue of the British journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society Series A: Mathematical, Physical, and Engineering Sciences, that satellite measurements of the Antarctic ice sheet showed significant growth between 1992 and 2003. And the U.N. Climate Change panel reported in February 2007 that Antarctica is unlikely to lose any ice mass during the remainder of the century.

Correcting the reams of misinformation and compensating for the hot air that Big Al releases into the atmosphere does not seem to be in Al Gore's nature, but don't be surprised to see him back in the Presidential race soon; if only one of his opponents would confront him with the facts about Gore's false Global Warming claims. Don't hold your breath.

Irresistable Science vs. Immovable Object Hollywood

A.J. Strata quotes a meteorological expert in saying that Global Warming will be a "complete joke" five years from now. That may well be, but the election is two years from now, not five. And Al Gore is waiting in the wings. Faster, please.

"Carbon Credits" = Fraud

Thanks to Glenn for finding this article which completely defangs the Carbon Credits scam; it mirrors what I flagged here last month about Al Gore being one of the biggest beneficiaries of one of the largest Carbon Credits LLCs. Why doesn't Henry Waxman convene a Senate panel on that? It certainly heavily impacts his constituents...

Carbon Credits=Fraud. Al Gore=Fraud. Man-made Global Warming? You make the call.

An Idea whose Time has Come: Guilt Offsets

If you read my blog with any regularity, you probably already know all about Al Gore's Carbon Offsets--the ones he funnels his money to in order to "counter" his $22K per year electric bill, his private jets, limos and other "carbon footprints" which are causing Martian Warming. You probably also know that Generation Investment Management LLP--the company he pays those "offsets" to has a chairman and co-founder named...Al Gore! So--to review--in order to assuage his "guilt" for his exponentially larger carbon print than the average citizen of the evil United States, the Goreacle is giving his money to...himself. And then he immediately goes out to the media and tells them about how responsible he is being. And thus the elite media's Gore-gasm continues, unabated...

Not to be outdone by this mass-media confidence game, however, entrepreneurs Dave and Glen of Total Kaos have created Guilt Offsets for just about every transgression possible.

In this spirit of helping the guilty come clean, I would like to throw my own entry into the fray for the 216 Democrats and 2 Republicans who have betrayed their country (and for any future Congressmen, Senators, CIA agents, reporters, or currency traders who do so): I will call these the "American Defeat Footprint Offsets". Just click here, page down to the Pay Pal button (it is on the right), and give as much as your guilty conscience dictates. I promise to contribute most of the proceeds to the Congressional opponents of the traitors, or to good causes like the Heritage Foundation.

(Cross-posted at The Wide Awakes--a great blog of like-minded conservatives.)

Fred Thompson discusses Martian Warming (and other items Al Gore forgot to mention)

Man, all those SUV's driving around on Mars are really messing things up for that planet. I must have missed the part of Al Gore's Senate testimony yesterday where he discussed the CO2 problem on Mars.

Fred Thompson may not have announced his candidacy yet, but he is off to a damn good start on the issues:

Some people think that our planet is suffering from a fever. Now scientists are telling us that Mars is experiencing its own planetary warming: Martian warming. It seems scientists have noticed recently that quite a few planets in our solar system seem to be heating up a bit, including Pluto.

NASA says the Martian South Pole’s “ice cap” has been shrinking for three summers in a row. Maybe Mars got its fever from earth. If so, I guess Jupiter’s caught the same cold, because it’s warming up too, like Pluto.

This has led some people, not necessarily scientists, to wonder if Mars and Jupiter, non signatories to the Kyoto Treaty, are actually inhabited by alien SUV-driving industrialists who run their air-conditioning at 60 degrees and refuse to recycle.

Silly, I know, but I wonder what all those planets, dwarf planets and moons in our SOLAR system have in common. Hmmmm. SOLAR system. Hmmmm. Solar? I wonder. Nah, I guess we shouldn’t even be talking about this. The science is absolutely decided. There’s a consensus.
Ask Galileo.
(ps - have you heard? Al Gore won an Oscar!!).

Steyn: How Gore's Massive Energy Consumption Saves the World

Sheer genius. (please--do not hesitate--go read the whole thing):

... How do "carbon offsets" work? Well, let's say you're a former vice president and you want to reduce your "carbon footprint," but the gorgeous go-go Gore gals are using the hair dryer every night. So you go to a carbon-credits firm and pay some money and they'll find a way of getting somebody on the other side of the planet to reduce his emissions and the net result will be "carbon neutral." It's like in Henry VIII's day. He'd be planning a big ox roast and piling on the calories but he'd give a groat to a starving peasant to carry on starving for another day and the result would be calorie-neutral.

So in the Reverend Al's case it doesn't matter that he's lit up like Times Square on V-E Day. Because he's paid for his extravagant emissions. He has a carbon-offset trader in an environmentally friendly carbon-credits office suite who buys "carbon offsets" for Al from, say, a terrorist mastermind in a cave in the Pakistani tribal lands who's dramatically reduced his energy usage mainly because every time he powers up his cell phone or laptop a light goes on in Washington and an unmanned drone starts heading his way. So, aside from a basic cable subscription to cheer himself up watching U.S. senators talking about "exit strategies" on CNN 24/7, the terrorist mastermind doesn't deplete a lot of resources. Which means Tipper can watch Al give a speech on a widescreen plasma TV, where Al looks almost as wide as in life, and she doesn't have to feel guilty because it all comes out . . . carbon-neutral!

And, in fact, in the Reverend Al's case it's even better than that. Al buys his carbon offsets from Generation Investment Management LLP, which is "an independent, private, owner-managed partnership established in 2004 and with offices in London and Washington, D.C.," that, for a fee, will invest your money in "high-quality companies at attractive prices that will deliver superior long-term investment returns." Generation is a tax-exempt U.S. 501(c)3. And who's the chairman and founding partner? Al Gore.

So Al can buy his carbon offsets from himself. Better yet, he can buy them with the money he gets from his long-time relationship with Occidental Petroleum. See how easy it is to be carbon-neutral? All you have do is own a gazillion stocks in Big Oil, start an eco-stockbroking firm to make eco-friendly investments, use a small portion of your oil company's profits to buy some tax-deductible carbon offsets from your own investment firm, and you too can save the planet while making money and leaving a carbon footprint roughly the size of Godzilla's at the start of the movie when they're all standing around in the little toe wondering what the strange depression in the landscape is. ...
